Daily Foot Checks for People with Diabetes

GWS Wellness – Cek Kaki Setiap Hari Buat Penderita Diabetes

If you have diabetes, foot care isn’t just about comfort—it’s essential to your overall health. Minor issues, such as a blister or sore, can quickly escalate into serious infections or even amputation if left untreated. The good news? It’s preventable.

The key: a daily foot check. It’s simple, takes just a few minutes, and you can do it at home.

Why Diabetics Need to Be Extra Careful

Diabetes can cause diabetic neuropathy—nerve damage from high blood sugar. That means your feet might feel numb. You could have a cut or blister without realizing it. These unnoticed wounds can turn into ulcers, infections, or even gangrene (tissue death).

How to Check Your Feet at Home

Do this every day—ideally at the same time (like before bed):

• Wash and dry your feet thoroughly. Sit somewhere well-lit.
• Inspect the tops, soles, heels, between the toes, and around the nails.
• Use a hand mirror to check the soles and between toes—or ask someone to help. Look for:

  • Cuts, blisters, or sores
  • Calluses or bumps
  • Redness or swelling
  • Cracked or overly dry skin
  • Nail discoloration, thickening, or pain
    • Feel your feet—any areas that feel colder, harder, or rougher?
    • Test circulation: press on the tip of your toe. The color should return within 5 seconds. If it doesn’t, blood flow might be poor.

Record your findings in a journal or take photos with your phone.

What to Do If You Find a Problem

• For minor issues, such as small scratches, clean the area, apply antiseptic cream, and monitor it daily.
• Use diabetic-safe creams, such as wund+™ Regeneration Cream, to keep skin hydrated and support healing.
• If the wound doesn’t improve in 2–3 days, becomes swollen, or oozes, see a doctor immediately.
• Most importantly, keep your blood sugar stable through medication, exercise, and a healthy diet.

A 5-minute foot check every day can help prevent serious complications. It’s a small habit with a life-changing impact.
