Burned by Steam? Here’s What to Do

Ever got hit by a burst of steam while boiling water or opening a steamer lid? It stings, burns, and can send you into a panic. This type of injury is called a steam burn. If not treated properly, it can lead to infection or leave long-lasting scars.

Steam Can Burn Your Skin

Steam can escape under high pressure from household items like kettles, steam irons, pressure cookers, or steam cleaners.

When it touches your skin, the extreme heat can “cook” the tissue, damaging proteins and killing skin cells. This triggers inflammation.

Know the Degrees of Burns

  • First-degree: Red skin, similar to a sunburn.
  • Second-degree: Blisters and intense pain.
  • Third-degree: Charred or waxy-looking skin, possibly numb due to nerve damage.

Burns may also appear as red or peeling skin, swelling, blisters, or skin that turns pale, white, or even blackened.

Pain levels don’t always match the severity. Serious burns can cause numbness.

First Aid for Steam Burns

GWS Wellness – Cool the Burned Area with Running Water.

If you or someone near you gets burned by steam, don’t panic. Follow these steps:

1. Cool the Burned Area

Immediately run cool (not cold) water over the area for 20–30 minutes. This helps stop the burning process and reduce pain.
Never apply ice directly—this can damage deeper tissue and worsen the injury.

2. Avoid “Old-School Remedies”

Butter, egg whites, toothpaste, cooking oil—forget them. These can trap heat and introduce bacteria into the wound, increasing infection risk without any real benefit.

3. Don’t Pop Blisters

Blisters are your body’s natural protection. Let them be—they help healing. If a blister breaks on its own, gently clean the area with clean water and apply an antibiotic cream.

4. Keep Skin Moisturized

Once the burn is dry and free from pus, focus on aftercare. Moisturizing the area is essential to avoid scarring, dryness, or itching.
