Signs Your Wound Is Starting to Heal

A wound is damage to the skin or body tissue, which can occur as a cut, tear, puncture, burn, or even as a result of medical procedures such as surgery.

Wound healing takes place in stages, starting from inflammation until new tissue is formed.

At first, the wound may appear red, swollen, and moist. Once it closes, it often leaves a raised red or pink scar, which will gradually fade and flatten over time.

The Four Stages of Wound Healing

1. Hemostasis (blood clotting)

When a wound occurs, blood flows out and quickly clots to close the wound. The clot then dries and forms a scab.

2. Inflammation

This phase lasts up to 7 days for acute wounds (longer for chronic wounds). White blood cells work to fight bacteria and clear dead tissue. The wound typically looks red, warm, swollen, and painful.

3. Proliferation

New tissue starts to fill the wound, marked by the appearance of pink granulation tissue, the growth of new blood vessels, and the closure of the wound. This stage can last from 4 days up to 3 weeks or more.

4. Remodelling (maturation)

Scar tissue begins to form. This process can take months to years. The new skin will be stronger, although scar tissue usually only regains about 80% of the strength of normal skin.

How Long Does a Wound Take to Heal?

  • Small wounds usually heal within a few weeks.
  • Surgical wounds typically heal in 6–8 weeks.
  • Large or deep wounds may take longer, especially if left open.
  • Overall health factors (such as diabetes or infection) can significantly affect healing speed.
